Innovators for Global Health, aims to improve global health through applied biomedical engineering and collaboration with local stakeholders. We provide students with the opportunity to tackle real-world challenges by leading trips to international partners for needs assessments, educational workshops, and device implementation.
Our first trip to Ghana in March 2023 focused on establishing new partnerships and understanding the local healthcare landscape. We conducted needs assessments at three hospitals—Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Kyebi Government Hospital, and Dwenase Health Centre—identifying critical gaps in medical device availability and functionality.
These insights resulted in three medical device projects: a low-cost hospital bed, a suction machine add-on, and an oxygen splitter, which were implemented during a follow-up visit in March 2024. This trip also included further needs assessments to prioritize future projects, such as a neonatal pulse oximeter, an infant phototherapy system, and a Maternal Health Monitoring System. Additionally, IGH established a chapter at Academic City University in Accra to strengthen local ties.
The upcoming 2025 trip for 12 students and one faculty advisor will focus on delivering these devices, conducting new assessments, and hosting a summit with IGH chapters at the University of Ghana and Academic City University. We appreciate your support to help us achieve our goals!
