Student-led coalition against racism in healthcare
Black Health Matters Contact-a-thon
Black Health Matters is a collaborative effort by several Northeastern University organizations to raise money and awareness for four grassroots organizations — Boston GLASS Program, Center for Black Women’s Wellness, Lee Thompson Young Foundation's Meet Mental Health Needs Project, The Okra Project — dedicated to improving the health statuses of Black and LGBTQ+ communities. The effort is led by Northeastern University Global Health Initiative (NUGHI) in partnership with Minority Association for Pre-health Students, Student Alliance for Prison Reform, Health Disparities Student Coalition, Sisters in Solidarity, VITAL, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Northeastern University Red Cross, and Boston University Minority Association for Pre-Health Students. We aim to achieve our goal by utilizing the wealth of Northeastern community, both financially and resource-wise, with a contact-a-thon of students, alumni, and all members of the Northeastern community.
The contact-a-thon will involve a four-hour Zoom meeting (northeastern.zoom.us/j/98311806356) open to the public on Thursday, Aug. 3 – 7 pm EDT. During this time, participants can join the Zoom to hear speakers from the four beneficiary organizations and experts on health disparities, and to contact as many people as possible asking them to donate. Donations will be accepted through 8 am EDT on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Collected donations will be split evenly between the four organizations. Participants of the contact-a-thon can stay on the Zoom call for as long as they choose and attending the Zoom call is not mandatory. Participation will just require the commitment to sending the fundraising link to as many people as possible. Our monetary goal for this contact-a-thon is $5000 — with your help our student-led coalition will be able to make a difference.
Through the Contact-A-Thon we aim to provide financial empowerment to four incredible organizations dedicated to improving black health statuses in the United States:
Boston GLASS Program - a Boston-based program that provides behavioral health services for LGBTQ+ youth of color living with HIV, free STI testing and treatment, and other forms of support for LGBTQ+ youth.
Center for Black Women’s Wellness - an organization working to improve the physical, mental, and emotional health of Black women and families in Atlanta.
Lee Thompson Young Foundation's Meet Mental Health Needs Project - program that provides free therapy sessions to POC who are seeking affordable mental health services.
The Okra Project - organization that extends free, delicious, and nutritious meals to Black Trans people experiencing food insecurity.
