FAQ

HuskyStarter, Northeastern’s own crowdfunding platform, is exclusively available to officially recognized student organizations and university-affiliated organizations at Northeastern and has no fees. All funds raised go directly to the organization.

HuskyStarter is the only university-sanctioned crowdfunding platform: use of any other platforms by recognized student and university-affiliated organizations is prohibited.

What is crowdfunding?

The practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small gifts from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. GoFundMe, Kickstarter, and Indiegogo are a few examples of the crowdfunding options available to the general public.

Using HuskyStarter for Your Project

HuskyStarter is a unique opportunity to expose your efforts to thousands of potential donors.

What can HuskyStarter be used for?

Officially recognized student organizations and university-affiliated organizations at Northeastern that seek to fundraise for projects are eligible to use HuskyStarter. The money raised cannot benefit or be designated to one specific person. Funding should benefit a team initiative, university program, or academic area on campus. All projects must have advisor, faculty, or staff approval.

Where does the money raised go?

One hundred percent—yes, 100%—of the money raised goes directly to the organization's university-issued budget number, even if the fundraising goal is not met. Every organization must have a university-issued budget number in order to use HuskyStarter. No money will be distributed to individuals.

Who can submit a project?

Any currently enrolled students in good standing with the university can submit on behalf of their officially recognized student organization or university-affiliated organization.

How are the projects approved?

Projects are reviewed by staff members in Alumni Relations to ensure projects support Northeastern's mission and values. The intent is that all projects that meet the eligibility requirements are approved. We reserve the right to deny projects that are counter to our mission and values.

How do I submit a project?

Click on the Submit A Project tab on the top of the page.

Prepare for your submission by reviewing the submission checklist. You are also encouraged to view a sample project.

How long does it take for a project to be launched?

Generally, within four (4) business days of a submission.

Once a project is approved, what is the responsibility of the students and their organization?

Once approved, students and their organizations must:

  1. Strategize! Crowdfunding requires hard work and a carefully planned campaign. Write content, create email lists, and consider external marketing channels.
  2. Utilize their own networks to promote projects and drive donors to the site. Project members are expected to send out at least six email asks and publicize the project on social media.
  3. Acknowledge the project’s donors by preparing a written thank you to be emailed on your behalf by the Office of Alumni Relations.
  4. Document your project through photos or video, providing an update to your donors once the project is completed. The Office of Alumni Relations will email this on your behalf.
  5. Use the funds raised toward the stated project outlined on the project.

The Office of Alumni Relations reserves the right to freeze the availability of funds raised if an organization fails to fulfill its responsibilities.

What is the typical timeline for a project?

The most successful projects regard a 60-day timeline from start to finish. A good rule of thumb is to spend the first 15 days of your project planning, gathering information, and submitting the information required on the submission form. From this point, it will take the Office of Alumni Relations approximately 4 business days to review and launch (if approved) your project. This gives you 40 days to promote and market your project on the platform.

What does it take to have a successful HuskyStarter?

To have a successful HuskyStarter, you need a compelling story that clearly illustrates your need. A creative communication plan which reaches beyond Northeastern alumni. A willingness to invest time and effort into planning for, launching, and fundraising your project is also a necessary ingredient for success.

What if a project goal is not reached?

Projects will receive all donations made to the project even if the goal is not reached. In the event a project cannot be undertaken, the money raised will be retained by the officially recognized sponsoring student organization or university-affiliated organization for use on a project with similar goals.

What if a project goal is exceeded?

One hundred percent of the money raised goes directly to the organization's university-issued budget number. The more money raised, the greater the impact.
